In 1992, Perry staged his first play, “I Know I’ve Been Changed,” in a community theatre in Atlanta. Perry continued to hone his craft, eventually developing the character of Madea, a tough-talking, no-nonsense grandmother who became the centrepiece of his plays. However, his early efforts were unsuccessful, and he faced rejection after rejection.
